By back zone
Symmetry exercises
Eight of the 77 exercises in BackMaxx touch Symmetry. None targets it directly, and all eight have one thing in common: they load one side at a time.
The short answer
Symmetry exercises do not exist as a category in BackMaxx: no exercise carries Symmetry as its primary zone. Eight movements touch it as a secondary, and all eight are unilateral — one arm or one leg at a time. Left equals right, and balance reads as quality, so the zone rises as a consequence of one-sided work.
No movement here is a Symmetry exercise
Eight exercises touch Symmetry, and not one has it as a primary zone. This is the only zone in BackMaxx scored entirely from how other work lands. Eight movements carry it as a secondary tag, and all eight share a single trait: each loads one side of your body at a time.
That is the whole selection rule. A bilateral row lets the stronger side quietly take more of the bar. A one-arm row cannot.
Eight movements, one side each
| Movement | Swap it in for | Prescription | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-Arm Dumbbell Row | Dumbbell Bent Over Row | 3 × 8–12 | Beginner |
| Kettlebell Single-Arm Row | Banded Row | 3 × 8–12 | Beginner |
| Bird Dog | Superman | 2 × 8–10 | Beginner |
| Single-Arm Cable Row | Seated Cable Row | 3 × 10–12 | Intermediate |
| Landmine Romanian Deadlift | Romanian Deadlift | 3 × 8–12 | Intermediate |
| Single-Leg Romanian Deadlift | Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift | 3 × 8–10 | Intermediate |
| Meadows Row | Barbell Row | 3 × 8–10 | Advanced |
| Commando Pull-up | Pull-up | 3 × 4–8 | Advanced |
Five of the eight run at home and all eight run in a gym. One-Arm Dumbbell Row is the cheapest way in — hips square, torso still, no twisting to finish a rep.
The swap rule
Do not add these on top of a session. Substitute one for its bilateral twin, in the same slot, at a weight the weaker side can complete the prescription with.
Lead with that weaker side, then stop the strong side on the same number. If the left gives nine reps and the right could give twelve, the set is nine and nine. Three cues carry the zone: square hips on the rows, level hips on the Bird Dog, and no shoulder rolling forward at the stretched end of a single-arm cable row.
How Symmetry gets scored
Every zone scores 0 to 100. Symmetry is the only one read across the photo rather than down it: the model compares the left half of your back against the right and scores how closely they match.
Because it is a comparison rather than a measure of size, a Symmetry score can sit high while the other five zones sit low, and it can slip as one side grows faster than the other. It is the one zone that can go backwards during a training block that is working. The back symmetry guide covers reading that number over several scans.
Raising it without a Symmetry session
If Symmetry comes out as your weakest zone it does lead the plan — but with no primary movement to open with, the session is built from these eight and warmed up with Bird Dog. More often the zone climbs as a side effect: a Meadows Row instead of a Barbell Row inside a Lat Width session, a Single-Leg Romanian Deadlift instead of a bilateral one.
Photograph the same way each week — same distance, same light, same arm position. A change in how you stand shifts the left-right comparison more than a week of training does.

Frequently asked questions
Which exercises improve back symmetry?
The eight unilateral movements that carry the zone: One-Arm Dumbbell Row, Kettlebell Single-Arm Row, Bird Dog, Single-Arm Cable Row, Landmine Romanian Deadlift, Single-Leg Romanian Deadlift, Meadows Row and Commando Pull-up. Each loads one arm or one leg, so the stronger side cannot cover for the weaker one.
Why does no exercise list Symmetry as its primary zone?
Symmetry is visual balance between the two halves of your back, not a muscle you can point at. Every one of the 77 exercises builds size somewhere specific, so the eight that touch this zone do it by loading each side separately. Say that eight exercises touch Symmetry, not that there are eight Symmetry exercises.
How many sets should the weaker side get?
The same number as the strong side, at the reps the weaker side can actually finish. Lead with the weaker side and cap the strong side on its count — nine and nine, not nine and twelve. That is the whole method.
Can a Symmetry score drop while training well?
Yes. It measures how closely the two halves match, so growing one side faster than the other lowers it even as the other five zones climb. It is also the score most affected by how you stand for the photo, which is why the pose should stay identical week to week.
Which of these do you actually need?
BackMaxx scores six zones and eight muscles from one photo, then picks the movements that fix the lowest number — from the same 77-exercise library.
