Back Score rank
Grandmaster: a Back Score of 78 to 84
The back people ask about. Nothing reads as missing from behind, the bands have started narrowing, and the remaining points sit in two zones you cannot bully.
The short answer
Grandmaster is the seventh rank on the BackMaxx Back Score scale: a Back Score of 78 to 84. At seven points it is the first band narrower than eight. It means a back with no obvious gap from behind, where Lower Back detail and Symmetry usually decide the score. Titan begins at 85.
Grandmaster is 78 to 84
Seventh of nine ranks, and the first band on the ladder that is not eight points wide. Grandmaster covers seven. The narrowing is the only honest scarcity signal available here — there is no published distribution of Back Scores, but the bands themselves get tighter as they go up, which tells you what the scale thinks of the territory.
At 78 the back has cleared every obvious threshold. Nothing about it reads as a beginner’s photograph badly lit, and nothing about it reads as a zone left untrained.
What a Grandmaster photo does not show
The useful description at this rank is negative. There is no flat panel between the shoulder blades. There is no square corner where the shoulder ends. There is no straight section in the outline between armpit and waist. There is no smooth stretch either side of the spine.
What is there: the infraspinatus plate visible under the shoulder blade, separation holding through the whole set of zones while standing relaxed, and a lat edge that stays defined when the arms hang dead. Traps frame without dominating. The teres major reads as its own bulge rather than as part of the lat.
Which is why the honest read at Grandmaster is that the photo has stopped answering “what is missing” and started answering “what is uneven”.
Lower Back and Symmetry decide this band
Both zones share a property: more of what got you to 78 does not move them.
Lower Back detail is not a volume problem. The erectors recover slowly, so two hard sessions a week is plenty, and a back at this rank is usually doing more than that between hinges, heavy rows and carries. The points come from holds and controlled hinge work, not from another heavy pull.
Symmetry is the other one, and it is structural. No corpus exercise leads with Symmetry; 8 exercises touch it as a secondary zone. A Grandmaster back has enough mass that a habitual strong side shows as a score, and the only lever is unilateral work with reps matched to the weaker side rather than the stronger one.
Seven points to Titan, and the steps get shorter
| Rank | Band | Band width |
|---|---|---|
| Grandmaster | 78–84 | 7 |
| Titan | 85–90 | 6 |
| GOAT | 91–100 | 10 |
Titan begins at 85. From the Grandmaster floor that is seven points, from 84 it is one. Then Titan asks for six more to reach 91.
Thirteen points separate the bottom of this band from GOAT, which is less than the width of the Newbie band alone. Nothing about them is easy, but the arithmetic is worth knowing: from here, the ladder is short and steep rather than long.
A three-week sweep between blocks
Posture Reset is an unexpected recommendation at 78, and it is the right one. Its lead zones are rear delts, lower back and upper back — two of those are the zones deciding your band — and it runs three weeks, the shortest of the five, so it fits between heavy blocks without costing a training cycle.
Use it as a sweep, not as a rebuild. Keep one heavy hinge and one heavy row in the week, then let the program’s lighter work handle the zones that are not responding to load. The lagging-muscle guide is the right companion, because at this rank “lagging” means a two-point zone gap rather than an absent muscle.
Chasing new exercises
The corpus has 77 movements and you have probably run most of the ones that matter. Adding number 78 is not what is between you and Titan.
Photo conditions are, more than at any band below. Seven points is a narrow corridor, and a scan taken in different light, from a different distance, with the arms held differently can move a score by enough to blur a real change. Same spot, same time of day, same stance, weekly — then read the trend, and let Titan arrive as a trend rather than as a single lucky photograph.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Back Score of 80 good?
An 80 sits in the lower half of Grandmaster, which runs 78 to 84. It describes a back with no obvious gap from behind and separation holding at rest. Titan is five points above an 80.
How many points from Grandmaster to Titan?
Titan begins at 85, so seven points from the Grandmaster floor of 78 and one from its ceiling of 84. Grandmaster is the first band narrower than eight points, and Titan is narrower still at six.
Which zone usually holds a Grandmaster score back?
Lower Back or Symmetry. Lower Back detail comes from holds and controlled hinging rather than more heavy pulling, since the erectors recover slowly. Symmetry has no exercise led by it at all — only 8 that touch it as a secondary zone.
Is Grandmaster the second highest rank?
No, it is seventh of nine. Titan sits above it at 85 to 90 and GOAT is the top rank at 91 and up. Grandmaster is the last band before the two narrowest steps on the ladder.
