Back Score rank
Pro: a Back Score of 54 to 61
Width, and the start of the V. The silhouette is doing the work at this rank, which is exactly why the profile is what holds the number down.
The short answer
Pro is the fourth rank on the BackMaxx Back Score scale: a Back Score of 54 to 61, an eight-point band. It means the outline from behind now flares — the V starts at the armpit and closes at the waist — while thickness through the middle of the back trails the width. Elite begins at 62.
Pro on the Back Score scale: 54 to 61
Pro is the fourth of nine ranks and the first band in the upper half of the scale. It runs 54 to 61, eight points, with Elite waiting at 62.
Any claim about the share of users sitting at Pro is invention — no distribution is published. The band’s own content is the claim worth reading: at 54 the back has a shape from behind that survives being photographed badly, and that is a genuine threshold.
The V has started, and where it stops
From behind, the silhouette flares. There is a visible widest point above the elbow, and the taper runs from there down into the waist without a straight section — that is the V-taper, and Lat Width is carrying it.
Teres Major has usually come along with it, giving the small bulge under the armpit that makes the whole V read wider than tape would say. Traps ramp from the neck rather than sloping. Rear Delts cap the shoulder, so the back of the arm has a round edge from behind.
Then the middle, which is where the band gets its ceiling. Upper Back is where a Pro photo loses points: the blades are outlined, the ridge between them is faint, and turning side-on shows a back that is wide from behind but shallow in profile. Lower Back shows two soft columns when braced and no branching detail.
Thickness is the tax at Pro
Width and thickness answer to different pulling directions, and the movements that build width are the ones people enjoy. Rowing volume gets cut first when a session runs long.
| Silhouette check | Zone | Typical at Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Flare above the elbow | Lat Width | High — the band’s strength |
| Ridge between the blades | Upper Back | Faint, holding the score down |
| Columns either side of the spine | Lower Back | Soft, no detail |
The rhomboids are the specific gap. They grow from rowing where the blades actually come together and pause, and they are silent under any pull where the elbows travel without the shoulder blades moving. Load second, retraction first.
Eight points to Elite
Elite starts at 62. From 54 that is eight points; from 61, one. Pro is the third consecutive eight-point band, so the step is the same size as the last two — the ladder does not start narrowing until Grandmaster.
Spend those eight on Upper Back and Lower Back. A back at this rank has the width to make thickness read immediately, and the reverse is not true: adding another point of Lat Width to a back that already flares changes the photo less than the first visible ridge down the middle does.
Rows lead from here
Thickness Block is the four weeks that fit. Horizontal pulling leads every session with the rear delts picked up on the way — its own summary is “rows, rows, rows” — and it is built to change how your back reads in profile rather than in outline.
Anchor it on Barbell Row at 3 x 6–10 and Chest Supported Row at 3 x 8–12, with Seated Cable Row at 3 x 10–12 when the heavy work is done. Add one hinge: Romanian Deadlift at 3 x 8–10 covers the Lower Back zone that Thickness Block does not lead with.
Width can wait
At Pro the temptation is more of what worked. Another pulldown grip, another five reps of pull-ups, another week of width when width versus thickness is the exact question your scan is answering.
Let Lat Width sit at maintenance for a block. One vertical pull a week holds it. Everything else goes to the middle of the back, and the eight points to Elite come out of the zones you have been treating as accessories.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Back Score of 58 good?
A 58 sits in the upper half of Pro, which runs 54 to 61. It means a back with a real V-taper from behind and a middle that still photographs shallow. Elite is four points above a 58.
What separates Pro from Elite?
Pro is 54 to 61, Elite is 62 to 69. The visible difference is separation holding at rest: at Pro the outline carries the photo, at Elite the lines between muscle groups stay readable without flexing. Eight points apart at the floors.
Should I keep training lats at Pro?
Keep one vertical pull a week to hold Lat Width, then put the rest of your volume into rowing and hinging. Width is usually your best zone at this rank, and best zones move slowest, so the points are cheaper elsewhere.
How long is a Pro to Elite jump?
The distance is fixed at eight points from the Pro floor; the timeline is not something BackMaxx predicts. Re-scan weekly under the same conditions and judge by whether Upper Back and Lower Back are moving, since those are the zones carrying the gap.
